Turkish Flatbread with Minced Beef, Herbs, and Spices

Looking for a quick and flavorful dinner idea? This Turkish flatbread, topped with spiced minced beef and finished with a refreshing minted yogurt drizzle, is just the thing! Perfectly crisp on the edges, bursting with aromatic spices, and easy to whip up, this dish is a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients: For the topping:

  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 250g/9oz beef or lamb mince
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp hot smoked paprika
  • 2–3 tsp tomato purée
  • ½ tsp fine sea salt
  • Fresh mint and coriander leaves, to serve

For the dough:

  • 200g/7oz Greek-style yoghurt
  • 200g/7oz self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

For the minted yoghurt:

  • 4 tbsp Greek-style yoghurt
  • 1 heaped tbsp finely chopped fresh mint leaves

Method:

  1. Preheat & Prep:
    Preheat your oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7. Lightly oil a large baking tray and heat it in the oven.
  2. Make the Dough:
    Combine all dough ingredients in a large bowl with salt and pepper. Knead lightly on a floured surface and roll into an oval shape, roughly 32x22cm/12½x8½in.
  3. Bake the Flatbread:
    Place the dough on the hot baking tray, drizzle with oil, season with pepper, and bake for 8–10 minutes until puffed up and browned.
  4. Cook the Topping:
    In a large frying pan, cook the mince with spices, salt, and pepper over medium heat for 3–4 minutes. Stir in the tomato purée and cook for another minute.
  5. Assemble & Finish:
    Spread the cooked mince mixture on the baked flatbread, drizzle with oil, and return to the oven for 2 more minutes.
  6. Make the Minted Yogurt:
    Mix yoghurt with finely chopped mint, a pinch of salt, and a tablespoon of cold water.
  7. Serve:
    Drizzle the flatbread with minted yogurt, scatter with fresh mint and coriander leaves, and enjoy!
